Inspiration 21 / Sheena Liam

One of my favorite things about art is the collaboration of different mediums. Last week's inspiration post by Elle reminded me of how much I love mixing photography with other forms of art such as illustration, painting, or sewing.

One of my really good friends who I love to craft with introduced me to Sheena Liam a few months back. Of course I immediately had to stalk her on Instagram and I was so happy I did. Sheena is a model and artist that sews incredible images of women using embroidery hoops to display them. The women's hair, often the focus, is so realistic against their 2D backdrop. Using just a needle and thread, Sheena manages to create scenes that seem all too familiar. The action of throwing our hair up in a bun or ponytail. Putting on our jackets when the breeze gets cold. Sitting on a chair after a long day. They're just simply beautiful.

Aside from all her amazing hoop art, I was particularly inspired by a body of work she recently created. Wait for it. A hand embroidered editorial which features her as the model (gasp). I was absolutely stunned when I came across this series. What a brilliant way of combining her love for modeling and embroidery into one. The editorial, shot by Lenne Chai, is soft and ethereal with colorful thread hand-stitched to the actual prints. I just love everything about it.

Follow Sheena's 2nd page on Instagram where she posts all of her creative work and check out some of my favorites below.
